posticon If only a five minute job took five minutes to do

Just spent the best part of 5 hours doing a 5 minute job!!

The old 412 has been running poorly recently and as adviced by Jane Terry (one of the county's few Type 4 gurus) 'try changing the fuel filter as it is only a 5 minute job and they do like a clean filter'...

Well finally decided to do it last night, clamped the fuel pipe above the filter from the fuel tank and pulled the old filter out. Easy bit done, time taken so far, a couple of minutes.

Got replacement filter out of box and reconnected the pipes, time taken about 5 minutes.

Unclamped the pipe and you can guess the rest...covered in lovely super unleaded petrol. Immediatly reclamped the pipe and had a closer look at the end of the pipes. The rubber had split where I'd pushed it onto the new filter under the external braiding.

Oh well I thought, the pipe is long enough to loose an inch...chop, refit, still leaking, BUGGER!.

In the end I had to leave the clamp on over night!

First thing this morning I went and "borrowed" a couple of jerry cans from my Dads shed and got a gobfull of petrol when syphoning the tank empty.

Removed the filter again and went to the motor factors for a couple of metres of fuel pipe and some new clips. Thought I would change all the pipes at the front myself and know it is done properly this time as these pipes were only fitted last year when it was in the garage for some other work and the fuel pump died.

Anyway, belching petrol fumes, I crawled back under the car and set to work exchanging all the pipes. About 12 connections later, took longer that anticipated as the pipes had to be cut slightly longer than the old ones to make the turns without kinking as it was slightly thicker and stiffer than the old.

Finally finished all the replacements, still belching petrol fumes by the way, I poured in a SMALL quantity of fuel. No sign of a leak, started it up, still no leaks so put the remaining fuel back in.

At last time for a shower to get rid of the worst of the smell of the stuff, by the way I can still taste the horrid stuff. Just need to take it for a run later and see if it has helped.

Incidently one of the clips was on the filter so tight it had crimped the exit hole slightly and the fuel that spilled out of the feed side of the old filter was a decidedly rusty colour so chances are this wasn't helping the situation.

And if it doesn't run any better at least I'll know the filter and lines aren't at fault!!
